I recommend HP. They have a good proven track record with printers. You say you want graphic design, but you don’t say the detail you want. Since you want a scanner built in, you have removed several types that I would say yes to for graphic design. Those are the photo printers.
You have also not mentioned price considerations. Nor, if you require color or not. Also you haven’t mentioned any paper sizes you need.
But lets assume you need color, you need no more than standard paper sizes and price is a factor.
Getting a color laser with those features, is in the 500 plus range. HP Color LaserJet CM1015 MFP is an example. The color quality is pretty good overall, but it is NOT photo quality. It is great for presentations, reports and the like in most business situations, it is not what you want for high quality photos.
Also the toner cartridges get expensive, I believe they are in the 100 range each and you need four of them. Black and three colors. The good part of all this is that if you aren’t going to print often, toner doesn’t dry out like ink. Laser are also faster overall in printing.
Next, inkjets give a higher quality, but ink does dry out if you don’t use it much. The inks can be costly, but usually half the price of toner. Using recharge kits is not advisable due to color distortions that I have seen. HP ink in an HP printer on HP photo paper will actually last longer than a regular photo will. Pretty amazing.
The best part of inkjets is that they are cheap. You can get into ones for under 100. You can also pay more for the features such as scanning and resolution of what you are printing. Factors such as speed also are involved.
I recommend going online to http://www.hp.com and using the selections there to narrow your decisions. Instead of placing the order online, you can go to local stores with the models you are looking at to see how they perform, print samples etc. You can also call hp to place the order and request assistance. A sales person can answer questions and help guide you to the model you need.
