One of the best brands on the market? Are you kidding? Science Diet is expensive /CRAP/. Purina One is a crappy quality dog food as well.
Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren’t safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timberwolf Organics.
Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material and higher quality ingredients means more concentrated nutrients… this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
Seriously on a budget? Two of the most affordable of the higher quality foods would be Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul and Canidae All Life Stages.
Before following your vet’s food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by… you guessed it, the crappy pet food companies! They also often get kickbacks from the companies for pushing these products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)
A great option is to go with an entirely grain-free diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grain-free formulas. Some good grain-free diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now!, Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Ziwipeak, and Taste of the Wild.
Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo.
If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality dog food brands have websites with store locators on them that will help you find the store closest to you which supplies their products. Simply type the dog food brand’s name into Google, go to their website, and type your zip code into their store locator.
Another option, if you can’t find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here’s an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/
Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing the new slowly in with the old over the period of about week or so), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. For example:
    Days 1 & 2: 75% old food, 25% new food
    Days 3 & 4: 50% old food, 50% new food
    Days 5 & 6: 25% old food, 75% new food
Day 7: 0% old food, 100% new food
Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:http://www.rawfed.com/ (RawFed)http://www.rawlearning.com/ (Jane Anderson’s Raw Learning Site)http://rawfeddogs.net/ (Raw Fed Dogs)http://www.rawmeatybones.com/ (Raw Meaty Bones)http://rawfed.com/myths/preymodel.html (Raw Prey Model Diet Vs. BARF Diet)http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html (Myths About Raw Feeding)
Also remember that freefeeding (leaving food down) is the fast lane to canine obesity. Make sure to have scheduled feeding times based on the feeding instructions on your dog’s food.

First of all, Science diet is not a good brand AT ALL. As well as Purina.
Avoid low quality brands you typically see at any grocery or pet stores like Iams, Purina, Beneful, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree or any brands that contain by-prducts and fillers such as beet pulp, corn, wheat, or other cheap grains.
    Go here…http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_…
I highly recommend natural/holistic foods such as Innova, Wellness, Merrick, Orijen, etc.

go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis and do a search for both purina one and hills science diet. both are filled with nasty ingredients that are simply not good for your dog.
take a look at the foods rated 5-6 stars and compare them with the 2 you are considering. while the better quality foods are more expensive, they will keep your dog much healthier and out of the vet’s office, which will save you $ in the long run. additionally, you will not need to feed as much of the better quality foods as they are nutrition-based, so you’ll not need to buy as much and save $ in that way as well.
petco and petsmart sell several of the foods in the 4-6 star range, and the prices are reasonable. if you sign up for the instore savings card, you will get discounts and a free bag of food for every 10 you buy there.

Purina One is crap, Science Diet is crap, anything you buy at the grocery store or walmart or the vet’s office (usually) is crap. You want to buy a dog food with few to no grains, no by products, no added colors, flavors or fats, no gluten, no wheat, no corn and no un named meat meals. Buy a food with a named meat as the first ingredient. I feed Healthwise, its a much better quality food than Science Diet or Purina but its not nearly as expensive as the higher quality foods like Wellness, Innova or Canedia. Its $20 for a 17lb bag, where as Science Diet is $36 for a 20lb bag.http://www.naturapet.com/brands/healthwi…

Here are some ingredients taken from their website:
corn gluten meal, oat meal, fish meal (source of DHA), whole grain corn, poultry by-product meal………
Corn and wheat are useless fillers and you don’t even want me to tell you what fish meal and by-products are. You’ll puke up your lunch. Commercial dog foods (Purina, Iams, Pedigree, Science Diet etc) contains stuff like euthanized animals, roadkill, diseased animals etc but thanks to a loophole they can put these things into the kibble.
I give my babies home made diet and they thrive on this. Home made food tends to be cheaper and you know exactly what you are giving your dog.

  • AUSSIEMO says:

HILLS SCIENCE DIET is one of the WORST FOODS on the market today. a 1/2 step up from Walmart’s Ol’ ROY.
    Canidae is fine
    Wellness
    Timberwolf Organics
    Natures Variety
Purina one is NOT GOOD either.

It’s an acceptable brand. However for about the same price you can get a MUCH better food at Walmart called Maxximum Nutrition Lamb and Rice. 20 lbs/ $18. No corn, no wheat, no by products. It’s a terrific Premium food, better than a lot of higher priced foods. Not all walmarts carry it so call around.http://hubpages.com/hub/Maxximum-Dog-Foo…

Well, I wouldn’t feed either one of those foods to my dog. Both are mostly corn. Ask any vet what the most common food allergies for dogs are and they’ll tell you it’s corn and wheat.
If you want a good dog food, you need to get out and find one that doesn’t have corn, corn gluten, wheat or wheat gluten in it.
My advice – learn more about canine nutrition before you go switching dogs foods.

  • wishnuwe says:

I feed my dog purina one simply because it is the only food he doesn’t puke. They have a sensitive system formula, and he can eat that without puking 7 times a day.

  • Anonymous says:

    Nothing Purina makes is good.
Science Diet is not a good food either.
Check out this website http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com to see what foods are good and what are not.

  • Steffi Giraffe says:

I think Hills Science Diet is a con. It is made of rubbish.
If you want the best for your dog, buy them a good quality brand (I don’t rate Purina). Things are only cheap when they are poor quality.

I endorse Kristina’s answer 100% Put me down as another Innova happy customer. I’d rather put a cut in our own food budget of a couple of bucks than switch..

  • Dog Trainer says:

Cheaper means cheaper food quality. If you are trying to save money keep the Science Diet, your dog will have less vet bills in the long run, plus when a dog eats, he poops. If you switch to a cheaper brand, your dog will need to eat more of it to get the nutrition and the more food that goes in, the more poop will come out! You will end up spending about the same in the long run, just because your dog will consume more of the cheaper food than the Science Diet!

  • 2bzy says:

Purina One Lamb & Rice formula is recommended by my vet for people who cannot afford expensive foods. One of my friend’s dogs had horrible skin allergies and I was giving her supplements and Benadryl, then the vet said to try the lamb & rice–huge improvement! Some of us take in stray dogs and can only afford so much for food. My dad always made us keep the number of pets at six; that’s all he could afford to feed. So through our childhood we kept eleven strays from being killed at the pound (our town has no shelter). We couldn’t have done it feeding them an expensive food. Most of them did fine, and they all lived over ten years old–two lived to be seventeen. So give the food a try and see how your dog does on it.

  • Kendall Sylvan says:

Purina One is one of the top brands available, and so is Iams. You can get coupons sent to you to try either brand if you go to their websites.
Dog Chow is also a Purina product, and it is less costly than the other premium varieties of food.

Would you like your dog to look like this?http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A9G_bF.ob5RJBR…
Uno has been on a Purina diet his entire life.
Dogs do not win at Westminster if their condition is anything but perfect.
When people say this or that isn’t any good, they are normally talking out of ignorance or bias.
All of my show dogs and field trial dogs are on Purina ONE. Why are they on a Purina diet? Because they consistently WIN while on that diet.
    edit
Guess you guys STILL haven’t noticed that I said that without bad mouthing ANY OTHER PRODUCT
I only bad mouth PEOPLE that bad mouth products that they have never used or know anything about.

All the major name brand dog foods are good. Purina One is a good brand. It’s a decision that’s up to you. Don’t let anybody else tell you what you should or shouldn’t feed. Talk to your vet and the people at the pet store. You can also look up studies done online
