Do not add water to the serum because it will dilute the product and its effectiveness and will also be pretty watery on your hair and you shouldn’t be putting heat from a flatiron on wet hair. A heat serum will work the same with curling irons and flatirons.
Might I recommend maybe trying Fabricate by Redken. It’s a heat activated protectant spray. Or if you prefer serums, Aveda makes one called Light Elements Smoothing Fluid. It’s about $23 a bottle but it’s super concentrated so it will last you a loooong time (I’ve had the same one for almost 2 years) and it’s very light and almost 100% natural.

styling product is not only to maintain your look, but also, it protects your hair from the heat of your irons. if you add water to the product, you will be burning your hair each time you use it! so, i wouldnt suggest it at all. if its too thick, try a new product. but, adding water messes up the chemistry and pH of the product, so it might not work at all once you do that.
