Business Link can help.
My advice would be:
* Stay as a sole trader, far easier paperwork wise
* Do not register for VAT until your turnover is building or your purchase costs
* Advise HMRC of your status and let them know your expected turnover – if it is low you will not have to pay NI on your self-employment
* Keep all receipts for any business expenses – you can offset them against your income & reduce your tax bill
* You may also be able to offset some of your household costs such as telephone, internet etc if you operate from home
Business Link is definitely your best source of help. The decision about sole trader or limited company is also influenced by the type of clients you’re targeting. If your prospects are small businesses, they’re probably quite happy to deal with another small business who is a sole trader. When you start dealing with corporates, it helps to be a limited company. The extra paperwork is not too huge if you do decide to go limited.
VAT registration is compulsory at the threshold turnover or it can be voluntary below that. Voluntary registration is worthwhile if you buy a lot of supplies that attract VAT. You can recover what you spend. If you don’t register voluntarily you have to think about what happens when you reach the threshold. Do you put your prices up to cover the VAT or do you take a drop in profit?
From personal experience I’d say you only get really serious about your business when you do it full time. It does help to have a cushion in the early days but if you really want to make your business fly you have to devote yourself to it full time. When are your prospective customers going to contact you? If you’re a wedding photographer, it’s OK for people to contact you evenings and weekends but when you’re working business to business, they need you available during business hours.
Good luck with your venture!
I think you business idea is a good one. I myself would like to start something similar. I don’t work a 9-5 job but as a nurse I have 3-4 days off at a time and always feel like I need to be doing something.
In order to register any business, just go to your Secretary of State and see if the name is registered or not. It cost about 150-200 dollars to register. I would register your domain name. If you do not register you could get in trouble down the road.
Good luck and hope everything works out for you.
I started a content site while working and now have left my job to concentrate on it full time, it has nearly replaced my salary. Content sites can be started for almost nothing just follow your interest and passion and get started but the marketing is difficult without information as I have found :
