All of the major brands are quite reliable these days. The choice between Glock, Smith& Wesson, Sig and the rest should be based on how the gun fits your hand. There is no best design as one that fits me perfectly may be terrible for you.
I hear your pain. My dad had a smith and wesson model 39 9mm when I was growing up. I swore I’d never own a auto myself. Talk about inaccurate, and I don’t think I ever made it through a full mag without a jam. Handguns have come a long ways. I broke down and finally bought myself a auto a few years ago. I love it. It is a Springfield XD40 Tactical. I have fired several thousand rounds without a single malfunction. I have complete confidence in it. Glocks, Rugers, Sigs, Brownings, any of the 1911’s, Berrettas, I could go on, but they all make pretty decent autos. Springfield makes as good an auto as is on the market, and they tend to be a little less expensive than some of the other models. I’ve had very bad experiences with Kahr (Auto Ordinance 1927a1 Deluxe to be honest, but it is owned by Kahr, and I will never own a Kahr because of that pile of crap, three trips back to the factory, and when they returned it the last time, the bolt was cracked lengthwise in two places from where they test fired it). I also had a bad experience with a Walther p22 (jammenest little 22 I’ve ever held, but I’ve heard good things about their full size autos). I’ve never been able to convince myself to try another Smith and Wesson auto, but I hear mixed reports on them. Sounds like a good reason to look elsewhere. They do make a top notch revolver however.
